The Six (6) Plus One (1) Writing Traits
The 6+1 Writing Traits
Discovering the Magic of Writing
Have you ever heard about the 6 plus 1 traits of writing? Well, I am just finding out about the concept of the 6 plus 1 traits of writing from my last class. This week's discussion went more in depth with the 6 plus I traits. There are 7 traits: Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Voice, Conventions, and Presentation. We looked at each of them and what they mean.
Organization Word Choice Conventions Voice
Sentence Fluency Presentation Ideas
At first, I was wondering why these traits are important to me and how I would use them when I return to the classroom. As the class went on, I came to realize why these traits are important. These traits of writing are important to students because the traits act as a guide that can help students to check their writing piece. These traits are linked with questions that students can be used to back check their work and assess students writing. These traits of writing are helpful to me as a teacher because these traits will make marking easier and provide me with a guiding process to assess my students and give students constructive feedback. I really appreciate having checklists for each writing trait that I can tweak as needed. It was an "aha" moment when I realized I can use various writing activities to help my students develop these traits. As I prepare for teaching practice, I am reminding myself to give students the opportunity to use these traits and provide them with checklists to reflect on their writing. The knowledge I've gained will be extremely helpful as I mark different writing pieces, using the traits as my guide.
