The Writing Process
This week's class we delved into the writing process, the 6 plus 1 trait and how they are interconnected. The writing process consists of five (5) stages. These five stages are prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Surprisingly, I realized that the writing process is not linear and allows us to revisit steps however you cannot skip any steps. I remember in school, we would start with prewriting, then move on to writing the piece that would be graded. Honestly, I cannot recall if my papers had corrections or just scores, and I never had the chance to publish my work. It was not until college, during Communication Studies, that I realized writing involves steps, and we should have the chance to go through each one. We actually went through each step, experiencing the process. Looking back, I wish in my earlier years, I had the opportunity to just write without worrying about spelling and grammar. The writing steps would have allowed me to tap into ideas without that pressure. As the discussion went on, the lecturer mentioned the "6 plus 1 traits of writing," I looked left, right, up and down wondering what that is. I had never heard of that before. Throughout the discussion, I was confused and could not recall what these traits were. It was not until we explored the connection between the writing process and the 6 plus 1 traits of writing that I finally grasped and understood the concept. The 6 plus 1 traits of writing are voice, idea, word choice, convention, organization, sentence fluency and presentation. I understand that these traits can seamlessly link to the writing process. For instance, the prewriting stage links with both organization and ideas, showcasing the overlap between different traits within the writing process. The knowledge I have acquired from this week's class is going to be instrumental in my teaching practice. I have come to understand the importance of guiding my students through each step of the writing process, allowing them the time and space to thoroughly engage with each stage. Recognizing that this is not a one-time activity but rather an ongoing process. Also, I am aware that evaluating and marking these writing pieces can pose a challenge for me. However, I am pleased to have acquired a valuable tool in the form of the 6 plus 1 traits of writing.

The introduction gained my interest. However, the information given is very clear and straight forward. Looking forward for more entries from you.
ReplyDeleteI like the analogy of the chef and preparing a meal by use of ingredients followed by a recipe . Truly the relationship between the writing process and the traits is similarly like a wholesome meal. Once, the "recipe" is followed, meaning the use of writing process along with the incorporation of the traits our you writers will create masterpieces. We as the teachers must take heed to guide our students in following and taking part in constructing their writing pieces, making sure to not omit step, or not pay close attention to what is needed. Thank you for the information.
