Creating a Climate for Writing

 Creating a Climate for Writing

This week we were tasked with reading an article entitled “Creating a Climate for writing.” The article discusses the physical and psychological environment of a classroom that fosters young writers. It highlights how the classroom setting should be safe and exciting for students. The article mentions that young authors should feel secure in taking risks with their ideas and skills during writing exercises and see mistakes as opportunities for improvement. The teacher should give positive feedback and allow ample time for writers to complete assignments at their own pace.

Before reading this article, I was aware that as teachers, we should ensure that the physical and psychological environment fosters learning. However, while going through this article, I found myself questioning whether I created a safe environment during my teaching of writing, if my feedback was constructive and helpful to my students writing. Additionally, I reflected on whether I have allowed them enough time to complete writing assignments at their own pace rather than pushing them to match my pace. This article made me reflect on my teaching methods.

The article highlights the teacher’s role in instilling the joy of writing on a daily basis. Prior to entering college, I disliked any form of writing. However, as I have matured through my college experience, I have come to understand that my attitude towards writing can significantly impact my students, and not necessarily in a positive way. I recognize the importance of adopting a positive outlook on writing to encourage my students to see it in the same light and thrive in their writing endeavors.

The article mentions various strategies, tools, and supplies to cultivate an effective writing environment, which I find valuable for my upcoming teaching practicum. The suggested strategies, tools, supplies along with the checklist provided in the article, will serve as practical guides to enhance the writing atmosphere for both me and my students. I plan to implement these strategies during my teaching practicum, utilizing the checklist to systematically evaluate and improve the strengths and weaknesses of my classroom environment, ensuring it is conducive to fostering effective writing practices.

  1. Good day, in reading your post i liked the chronological reflection you had about this strategy. Before ready, during and after. Most interesting part i liked was where you shared that your atttitude is paramount in the way your students see writing. and so you have acknowledge that it is important to have a positive look on the writing as it would allow student to have that same behaviour. This is nothing far from the truth .
